PRESENTING SLOW FOOD & YOGA FESTIVAL - Vol. II
It’s time to grab your yoga mats - the popular Slow Food & Yoga Festival is on its way back to Gili Air! After its establishment as a successful part of the month-long Gili Menggawe Festival earlier this year in June, Gili Air’s community is joining forces for the second edition. The Festival will run from October 17th – 20th 2019 and is being organised by the tribe of the Soraya Foundation.
The purpose of the Slow Food & Yoga Festival is to share the authentic beauty of Gili Air’s people and nature with visitors and locals alike. The Festival will also present opportunities to foster connections and valuable partnerships between locals and expats.
Over the four days, festival-goers will have the opportunity to kick off their shoes and wander the vehicle-free island exploring Gili Air culture through yoga, food, performance, and art. The festival will kick off with an opening ceremony on the 17th of October and lead into various activities around the island.
YOGA & FOOD
Yoga is a fundamental part of the Slow Food and Yoga Festival. During the four days, attendees can find their inner peace in assorted yoga classes run by acclaimed facilitators in various locations across Gili Air.
Slow Food, a movement focused on growing your own, eating locally and seasonally is an equally important part of the festival. Festival-goers are invited to sample delicious cuisine from famous Indonesian chefs at various locations around the island.
Aside from yoga and food, many other workshops and sessions are also being held. Thai massage workshops, therapeutic workshops, handstand workshops, ecstatic dance workshops, women’s/ men’s circles, sound healing, and local school performances are just some of the many events that will be held across the island during the Festival.
Additionally, several local charities will be manning market stalls to fundraise for their causes. The Pituq Foundation, which focuses on supporting the underprivileged and earthquake survivors to rebuild lives, and the Daur Project, concerned with finding sustainable solutions for environmental issues will be represented. Please support them generously!
The festivities continue on Gili Trawangan with a triathlon being held on the 19th of October.
The Slow Food & Yoga Festival will conclude with an exciting closing celebration on the 20th of October.
All proceeds from the Slow Food and Yoga Festival will go to the Soraya Foundation. Your ticket purchase will allow their upcoming projects to continue running - including helping the Gili Eco Tribe to work alongside Gili Cares to resolve recycling and rubbish issues, as well as supporting education initiatives in the community.
Businesses supporting the Festival and hosting events include Camilla Beach Club, Pura Vida Restaurant, Mexican Kitchen, Flowers and Fire Yoga Garden, H2O Yoga and Meditation, Kenza Village, Slow Villas & Spa, Le Bistro, Captain Coconuts and Gililife Magazine.

In June 2019 we had our first edition of Slow Food and Yoga Festival. It was 5 magical days with focus on food, local culture, and yoga. During the days of June 20-24, the island of Gili Air was transformed into a true festival paradise, where different events took place all over the island. Read all about our previous June edition here:
Slow Food and Yoga Festival: 20th-24th June 2019.
5-day festival incorporated in Gili Bangkit Festival: 15th June – 15th July 2019
Bangkit in Bahasa Sasak (the local language of Lombok) means ‘to rise’.
The island of Gili Air will be a hive of activity in June and July as two festivals are taking place! Gili Bangkit Festival, a month-long cultural festival will also include a five-day, Slow Food and Yoga Festival.
To celebrate the indomitable spirit of the Gili Islands, these cultural and lifestyle events will present a unique synthesis of local and regional Indonesian culture as well as newer international offerings on Gili Air. The focus will also be on promoting the island’s extraordinary natural beauty.
Gili Bangkit Festival will offer visitors the freedom to take off their shoes, live vehicle-free and explore Gili Air’s fascinating culture, through art and food. Fun activities include a triathlon, traditional stick fighting, workshops by local artisans, musical performances and dancing. While spending time on Gili Air, visitors will have the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in Sasak culture.
Slow Food and Yoga Festival will afford attendees the opportunity to step into a magical space outside of the frantic operations of normal life and lower collective rhythms down to a Zen hum! Yoga by acclaimed facilitators and cuisine from famous Indonesian chefs will be offered at various locations around the island. Top chefs and film-makers from the region will headline events, stallholders will showcase regional specialties, and visitors can participate in food-foraging tours and cooking classes.
All proceeds from Slow Food and Yoga Festival will be used to support educational initiatives, such as the zero-waste permaculture garden project at the local school, which has been created to encourage long-term eco-friendly behavior. Sustainability is the main theme and the festival area will have zero plastic and throw away containers or packaging.
Gili Bangkit Festival is a collaboration of local and foreign stakeholders, including the current head of the three islands and owner of Biba Beach, who will headline one of the food events; Chef Hero, renowned owner of Warung Sunny on Gili Air, will head up local events;Owner of Slow Villas, Julie Thonnard, will manage the yoga and evening food events; and Emily, Flowers & Fire Yoga Garden, who will host the yoga classes.
